TABSCON XVIII – March 21, 2009

Autoduellers!

TADA will be hosting Car Wars again at TABSON XVIII, which is happening March 21 at Trinity Presbyterian Church – York Mills which is located at 2737 Bayview Ave in Toronto.  You can check out the TABS (Toronto Area Boardgaming Society) website at tabsonline.net for more details on the organization.  We will have a game at 9am and probably another after lunch at 1 or 2pm. Games going longer than 3 hours will be called and decided on the basis of vehicle integrity and achievement of objectives.

Game One – 9AM

A free-for-all duel at Toronto Heatwave at Canada’s Wonderdeathland (built in 2054), incorporating patented Kaini Industries Dandelion security pillboxes.  Eliminate your fellow players while dodging randomly activated flamethrower fire from the pillboxes.

(Note: the design for this arena is widely thought to have been inspired by the Rainbow Bay Blast Furnace, described in Steve Jackson Games’ Car Wars Arena supplement book)

For the duel at Toronto Heatwave, we would like to invite interested players to make or bring their own at  1/60th scale model cars  (more or less the normal scale for die-cast cars made by matchbox, hot wheels, etc.)  Just find one of your old but golden dinky toys, add some weapons of a realistic scale (1/72 model kits are often a good source), paint it up, and bring it out.  We’re not perfectionists, and anything that looks roughly to scale will be fine (i.e. we will believe that a drinking box straw glued to the top of a hotwheels car and painted red is actually a flamethrower).

You can work up the stats and make playsheets for your vehicle using the wonderful madhat spreadsheet program, available for free download at:

http://cwhnj.com/madhat/carwars/download/default.htm

(please keep the value of your vehicle between about $15,000 and $40,000 so it’s not too hard for us to arrange a balanced game).

The organizers at Toronto Heatwave would like to add that fireproof tires and armour, and/or fire extinguishing systems, would be advisable. Of course, the TADA will have an onsite tent full of fully autoduel-ready cars, trikes, cycles and buses ready for rental (free with the price of admission to TABSCON XVIII!) if you need back-up, or for anyone who just wants to play on the day!

Game Two – After Lunch

SAVING SIR RICHARDsaving-sir-richard-11

March 21st, 2059

Sir Richard’s been taken hostage.  Adding insult to injury, he’s been taken hostage by a former girlfriend and a bunch of robots!  AND, he’s about to lose a delivery of ammo, cash and more.

He was captured by Janna Kaini and a team of droids in the parking garage of a never-fully-built, now ruined commercial-industrial building in the abandoned northwestern Toronto Superplex zone.  The Guns of Brixton are coming to the rescue!

There is also a melodramatic subplot involving the hidden relationship between Janna Kaini and the much older Branson (who in 2059 is somewhere in the region of one hundred medically-enhanced years old), but thankfully we can be spared the boring details.

Cut to the chase!

KAINI INDUSTRIES

If you want to play on Kaini’s team, it consists of Janna Kaini and a complement of her custom designed security droids and vehicles.  Your cars are stationary, but they can begin anywhere on the surface level or down in the garage with Branson.

You have apprehended Sir Richard Branson in the parking garage looking over his stash, and have sequestered his car, the Virgin Rocket for inspection and deconstruction.

Searching the materials, you have discovered a stolen dossier containing detailed plans of Kaini’s underground manufacturing plant.  The contents of the dossier would without likely fatally compromise Kaini’s short- to mid-term operations and make an embarrassing splash on the newsnets.  Those plans must not be removed from this parking garage.

Your team consists of Janna Kaini with her car, Roygbiv, and a mix of droid pedestrians and droid-operated security vehicles.  As long as you can prevent Branson from getting back in his car, you will have a point advantage over Branson and the Guns of Brixton.

If Branson or any of the other Guns of Brixton escape with the plans, you lose.  You cannot win (but may tie the game) if Janna Kaini gets killed.  You win the game as long as Kaini stays alive, the plans stay in the garage, and you have at least 50 points worth of droids and vehicles are operational at game end (immobile vehicles that can still aim fire at the enemy are considered operational).

TEAM MANIFEST

ROYGBIV – 43 POINTS
Janna’s personal transportation.  Her driver-droid is armed with a shotgun; her personal assist-droid, Olson, operates a pintle-mounted Vulcan machine gun to the rear.  Equipped with caltrops and a Kaini-designed heavy ice-dropper, Roygbiv is fast and very maneuverable, and its electric plant is equipped with hi-voltage capacitors which temporarily boost acceleration and speed (but damage the engine).  It carries a heavy shell of fireproof plastic armour.  Its weak spot: NO TOP! Can carry one extra passenger droid.

– OPTIONAL –

HISCORES – 9 POINTS
A subcompact auxiliary support or recon vehicle.  Hard to hit (-1) due to its size.  Lightly armed, but heavily armoured.  Can carry one extra passenger droid.

BOCUMA – 42 POINTS
Full-size, fast, maneuverable and also has hi-volt capacitors.  Heavily armoured and armed with a turreted Vulcan machine gun. Can carry two extra passenger droids.

SMOKE QUANTITY – 44 POINTS
The fastest and most agile Kaini vehicle.  Mounts a Kaini-designed-and-built flaming gas projector in the turret – a lethal weapon in tight spaces.  Be careful not to drive into your own cloud!

SIXTYTEN – 46 POINTS
The heavy artillery. Mounts rocket launchers front and rear and heavy rockets in pods.  All rocket ammo is impregnated with hi-incendiary chemicals.

NLOGAX – 52 POINTS
Bocuma’s nastier brother; as fast and agile as Bocuma, but with hi-res software in the controls for the turret-mounted magnetic cannon, it can kill a tire within sixty feet.

PEDESTRIAN/PASSENGER DROIDS
1 POINT (SHOTGUN)  – 3 POINTS (FLAMETHROWER)
Extra droids to guard Branson (and terminate him if necessary) are recommended.

THE GUNS OF BRIXTON

Sir Richard’s in a tight spot, but the Guns of Brixton were hanging out just a few miles away. He had just celled Johnny Casbah to tell him he had found something ‘really interesting.’  Then, ten minutes ago he activated his emergency beacon implant. You know where he goes to pick up shipments, and you regret letting him go there alone today.

If you want to play with the Guns, your team consists Sir Richard, his Virgin Rocket, and your mix of the vehicles, drivers and passengers of the Guns of Brixton.   Branson is down the ramp in the garage; your team begins anywhere on the tarmac, at any speed up to 50mph, no less than 2’ away from the building and no more than 1’ away from any other G.O.B. unit (vehicle or pedestrian).

You win if Richard manages to get the plans, located on top of pile of boxes, get in his car, and escape.  You also win if another G.O.B unit can pick him up in a different vehicle.  You still win if Sir Richard perishes (a tragedy), as long as any G.O.B. pedestrian unit can pick up what he found and take it out.  The game is a draw if you fail to remove the plans, but manage to terminate Janna Kaini.

The Guns of Brixton always say ‘death or glory’: they won’t retreat.

THE GUNS

SIR RICHARD/    THE VIRGIN ROCKET –      39 POINTS
Sir Richard himself is likely under guard by androids, but he has not been disarmed. His car (if he can get to it) is fast and armed with rockets linked to a high-powered light combat laser.  The Rocket’s armour is sloped (-1 to hit).

OPTIONAL

BILLY BOY    4 POINTS
Billy Boy rides a light cycle with a machine gun mounted in the handlebars; a light vehicle but hard to hit (-2).

STAGGER LEE      13 POINTS
Stagger rides a light three-wheeled ATV (-2 to hit) with a pair of the same light combat lasers that Sir Richard’s got in the Rocket.  A sharp shooter.

FLAMING PHIL    SPANISH BOMB    13 POINTS /
A compact car (-1 to hit) and lightly armoured, but nimble and armed with a grenade launcher firing explosive or flaming oil grenades.  With a flaming oil dropper, to boot!  Don’t catch fire, Phil, or you’ll explode!  Can carry one extra passenger.

JOHNNY CASBAH        KOKA KOLA     14 POINTS
Larger and slower than Phil’s Bomb, but more heavily armoured. Mounts a machine gun, front.  Can carry three extra passengers.

RUDIE         RUDIE CAN’’’”T FAIL   30 POINTS
Rudie’s camper is built for off-road, which is nowhere on the Superplex, but his heavy shocks might come in handy for driving, say, up stairs.  Rudie is protected by a metal compartment, and a roll cage.  His turreted recoilless rifle is loaded with high-explosive ammo and packs a nice punch. Can carry two extra passengers.

JIMMY JAZZ    BRAND NEW CADILLAC      30 POINTS
The Caddy handles like a well-balanced brick, but its got great torque!  It also mounts a heavier version of the same laser that Sir Richard’s got in the Rocket. Can carry three extra passengers.

LONDON CALLING        39 POINTS
A converted, armed and armoured double-decker ‘London’ Bus, mounting a ram plate.  Devastating in collisions, heavily armoured, and armed with a nice little gatling gun on the hood. Can carry seven extra passengers, on top or inside.  Pedestrians on top are an extra –2 to hit (-5 total) due to cover and height: what a great platform for a bazooka!

Pedestrians and passengers
Any of the G.O.B. team can be played as passengers in other vehicles (e.g. London Calling).  Stats for pedestrians are recorded on separate pedestrian cards as well as on their respective vehicle sheets.  In addition to the drivers of the above vehicles are the four members of the Clash (some cloned-resurrected, all medically well-preserved):

TOPPER HEADON    2 POINTS
Topper is using a Bazooka, which is a bit of a blunderbuss, but is not so bad with the laser scope Sir Richard got for him.  The Bazooka takes two full turns to reload; another pedestrian (Mick or Joe) can help him load in only one turn (firing every other turn).

JOE STRUMMER     1POINTS
Joe carries double-barreled sawed-off shotgun (great for hitting tires and pedestrians within 30 feet/6”) and extra shells he can load into Topper’s Bazooka.

PAUL SIMONON    1 POINTS
Paul also carries a sawed-off shotgun, and in addition packs a pistol and a grenade.

MICK JONES    1 POINTS
Mick is carrying a pistol and extra shells for Topper’s Bazooka.
